The Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand is a sacred pilgrimage that encompasses four significant Hindu religious sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Yamunotri: Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River, is the first stop on the Chardham Yatra. Situated at an altitude of 3,293 meters, the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna is accessible via a 6 km trek from the town of Janki Chatti. The best time to visit Yamunotri is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the trekking route is generally open and safe. Hotels and guesthouses are available in Barkot and nearby areas, offering basic amenities suitable for pilgrims. From here, one can do a same day excursion to Yamunotri Dham.
Gangotri: Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganga, is the second stop on the pilgrimage. Located at an altitude of 3,100 meters, Gangotri is reached via a motorable road from the town of Uttarkashi. The main temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The best time to visit Gangotri is from May to June and September to October. Accommodation options range from guesthouses to budget hotels in Gangotri town, catering to the needs of travelers and pilgrims. However, one can also stay in Uttarkashi town, and do a same day drip to Gangotri and back to Uttarkashi.
Kedarnath: Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is accessed via a challenging trek of about 16 km from Gaurikund. The trek route passes through beautiful landscapes and is open from May to October, with the best time being May to June and September to October. Helicopter services are also available from Phata and Sersi for those unable to trek. Accommodation options include guesthouses and dharamshalas in Kedarnath town, providing basic amenities for pilgrims.
Badrinath: Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the final destination of the Chardham Yatra. Situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters, Badrinath is accessible by road from Joshimath. The temple is open from May to October, with peak visiting months being May to June and September to October. Accommodation options in Badrinath range from deluxe hotels to guesthouses and dharamshalas, offering comfortable stays for pilgrims.
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to undertake the Chardham Yatra is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is generally favorable, with mild temperatures and clear skies, making it conducive for trekking and traveling through the mountainous terrain of Uttarakhand. Avoiding the monsoon season (July to August) is advisable due to the risk of landslides and heavy rainfall.

Hotels and Accommodation:
Accommodation options along the Chardham Yatra route vary from basic guesthouses and dharamshalas to mid-range hotels. Apart from Kedarnath, other destination offers facilities suitable for pilgrims, including clean rooms, hot water, and vegetarian meals.
In Kedarnath, the accommodation facilities are very basic (dharamshalas and lodges). There are no luxury accommodation facilities available there. As the temple of Kedarnath gets open only for 5-6 months in a year and since it is situated in a remote and rugged terrain at a high altitude, it’s challenging to build and maintain sophisticated infrastructure. Guests staying in these dharamshalas and lodges get basic beddings in the rooms – on sharing basis. You will find almost every room with four, five or six beds.
It’s recommended to book accommodation in advance, especially during peak pilgrimage months, to ensure a comfortable stay.

Road Conditions:
The roads leading to the Chardham destinations are scenic but can be challenging due to their mountainous terrain and narrow stretches. Road conditions improve significantly during the pilgrimage season, with authorities like BRO and other Government authorities ensuring maintenance and repair work. It’s advisable to travel with experienced drivers or opt for local transport services familiar with the routes and conditions.

Trekking is an integral part of the Chardham Yatra, especially for Yamunotri and Kedarnath. Trekking routes are well-marked and maintained, passing through picturesque landscapes and offering glimpses of Himalayan flora and fauna. Pilgrims should prepare adequately for trekking with appropriate clothing, footwear, and necessary medications due to the high altitude.
